Fundraising Begins for Vets Plaque



AUGUSTA, Maine - Governor Baldacci and several veterans groups kicked of a fundraising campaign to pay for a plaque in the State House Hall of Flags honoring Maine’s women veterans.

Lawmakers authorized the plaque to be placed in the historic Hall of Flags, but told veterans groups they would have to raise the money to pay for it. General Frances Auclair, the assistant adjutant general of the air National Guard is the highest ranking woman in the Maine National Guard.

The plaque costs $24,000 and at the kick off event several thousand dollars was contributed or pledged by veterans groups. Fund raising is in high gear because groups want to dedicate the plaque in November.
