Collins Takes FEMA to Task

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Susan Collins told Federal Emergency Management officials that they should be paying for science based flood maps, not pushing cost on local cities and towns.

Many Mainers must buy federal flood insurance, but who must buy the coverage is determined by flood plain maps based on national averages, not local science. Senator Collins says creating accurate maps should be the job of FEMA, since the feds require the insurance coverage.

Collins says Portland spent ten thousand dollars to have a correct map that reflects what could happen in Casco Bay during a storm. She says there are many other communities on the coast worried that FEMA flood maps do not reflect the real risk of flooding, forcing homeowners to buy insurance they do not need.
